My friend has an appointment to go look at this truck on Saturday morning. He wants me to go with him, so I can say stuff like “yep, that sure is a truck.”
Edited to add: this truck will be his daily, replacing a Jeep Liberty that perpetually has something wrong. He wants a truck because he likes trucks, and he thinks that he needs one for wintry weather. He works at a job where he cannot call off due to weather. He has one child and will tow something probably once a year to justify getting a truck. He wants to spend around $25,000. I've already tried to convince him that much cheaper vehicles will meet his needs, but he is beyond that. He doesn't want diesel either.
What does Oppo think? Link (ignore thumbnail, it’s the truck I posted above):

If it's an unnecessary truck, they pretty much HAVE to pony up for the Cummins model tho.

They’ll never make it as real truck people with that kind of mindset.

I have a couple of pros and cons on the RAM, this one in particular.
Pros: Hemi, dial transmission, 4x4, real bed, Hemi, front bench seat
Cons: Dial transmission, no front tow hooks, very cramped rear seat
Seems like a good deal overall.

No idea, maybe it isn't manly enough for him? I don't know why anybody wants a truck for their suburban commuting vehicle. He just likes it.

Tell him to bring his kid seat with him, because if it’s not a crew cab the space is cramped in back

Good thinking. The kid is ten. Do ten year olds use car seats? Booster seats? I don’t know how kids work.

I am not anti-truck. I am generally against getting way more vehicle than someone needs. I daily a Fiat 500 because that’s all I need to get around.
Trucks can be useful in a lot of situations. But I think it’s a little silly for my friend to spend that much money for a truck (and the added expenses compared to a car) when he doesn't need one.

Not a terrible price. We have some 17 QuadCabs on our lot for around that price and mileage. I’d probably look for one with the Uconnect 5 in screen as it comes with Sirius and better bluetooth.
If he likes it, then he probably already sold himself.

Oh I am far beyond the point of trying to talk him out of it. But earlier in his vehicle search he was describing what his vehicular needs were and I did attempt to provide some lower priced options.

Anecdotal, but I have always found way more used V8s than V6s in shopping for full size trucks. Take-rate on the V6 is generally not great when combined with crew cab and 4x4.

Truck good, buy truck.
Couple things to note on these, the quad cab (basically an extended cab) is going to be tight in the back, especially for adults. Being a quad cab does give him the longer box however, but since it sounds like this is more just because and less because he actually does a lot of truck things maybe a 5.5' would suit him better? That way he can get a crew cab, and all the extra space to go with it.
Second thing on this is that the sport trim Rams don’t have tow hooks (although you can cut holes in the bumper and add them). If winter driving is a strong reason to buy one I have no idea why you’d buy a truck without front tow hooks, but that’s just me.
Beyond that I really like this generation of Ram. Buy the truck.

My 10 year old doesn’t need any type of booster or anything. He’s your average sized 10 year old, so he’s probably ok without.

Thats not a bad price. V8 is thirsty tho and the big horn package makes the interior alot nicer. Does he really need a 4 door. Regular cab 4x4s go for cheap v8 or v6. Hard to find in big horn but doable.
2017 7100 miles bought for 25900 still got almost a year on warranty and its 700 pounds lighter than crew cab. Sticker was 41000 but I'm sure no one paid that. I’m kinda shocked how fun it is to drive.

That looks nice. I think he's set on something with a back seat though. I found a Big Horn for him but it was white and he wasn't a fan.

Something to consider is how long he plans to keep it. Everyone and their mother wants a gently used 1/2 ton with a crew cab, and prices will reflect that. If he can live with an extended cab, he’ll get a much newer truck for 25k. But, while a 10 year old will be perfectly happy in the back of an extended cab, a 14 year old probably won’t be.

He doesn’t want a truck. He definitely doesn’t want that truck.
He wants a Grand Cherokee or a body on frame SUV.
It’s more comfortable. It’s more luxurious. It’s better in snow. It’s got heated seats. And unless he’s pulling something really huge, a Grand Cherokee can easily tow it with the 5.7 Hemi. (7200lbs, can be increased to 9000lbs.)

Thanks to the horrors of Jeep Liberty ownership, he isn’t interested in any Jeeps besides Wrangler Unlimiteds. But I do think he'd be better off in an SUV instead of a pickup. But the heart wants what it wants.

The Liberty isn’t a Jeep. It’s a piece of shit with a counterfeit badge and an engine that any sane government would have banned for gross fraud and misrepresentation.

I think current recommendations is to keep them in car seats (first rear facing, then front facing) as long as they fit, then boosters until age 8.

One more thing. The stock Goodyears on the 20 inch tires are horrible in the wet and snow. Mine will break loose just merging lanes in the wet.

He hasn’t learned his les son with FCA p roducts? Sometimes it takes 2 mistakes for people to learn . I don’t know..for $25k I’d want more luxury, like painted door handles.

Exactly. I’ve been in the back of Dodge’s “extended” cab. It may have four doors , but that 2/3 size back seat isn’t a good place for more than short trip.

That’s fair. I’m not trying to talk him out of it. Early on in the process I tried to provide some lower cost alternatives that were a little more practical. This friend of mine is also currently trying to save up to buy a house, so when he told me he wanted a truck and was willing to have a $500/month payment, I did what I could.

I'm thoroughly enjoying my FCA vehicle, but mine was also only $7,500. That's the most expensive vehicle I've ever owned in my 17 years of driving, so I just get skeptical when someone that lives in the same town as me says "I need this big truck to handle the snow." It's PA. I drive my Fiat all winter. If you want a truck that's fine, but you don't need one.

He bought this truck and bought it home today. It's nice, I was just trying to get him to reconsider financing a $25,000 with a minimal down payment and a trade in with negative equity. I was hoping he'd get something cheaper for a while.
